The largest (and hardest) part of a good collaboration between a writer and an artist is communication. There’s nothing like seeing the story and the characters you imagined fully realized on the page, but there are lots of points along the road for that to go wrong.
Think of the last time you saw a movie based on a book you had read. How much did the person on the screen vary from what you thought you read on the page? Description is largely about degrees and while it’s easy to overdo it and leave your artist no wiggle room, it’s also easy to underdo it. If you forget to tell the artist the color of the character’s hair or the way a character stands, you may lose something. Worse yet, somebody may have to rewrite or redraw something when the two visions don’t gel.
Jules Rivera is one of the most communicative artists I’ve had the pleasure of working with. When she was designing a younger Bedelia for her short story, she wanted to make sure that I was happy with the way things looked and that it didn’t conflict with my vision of the character. What resulted was a great short story and collaboration.
This week’s “Friendly Ghosts and Gamma Rays” is up at Comics Attack and they’re talking about Princeless. Check out what they have to say:
http://comicattack.net/2012/10/ffgtgr1052012/
“The art on both stories is quality, giving off the vibe of the main title, but in their own slight ways. The layouts by Rivera on the second story, “The Smiths,” specifically has a nice flow to it. The writing is quality on both too”
There’s a wide range of art in Princeless: Short Stories for Warrior Women #2 and it’s all good. Rivera gets full run on “The Smiths,” showing why she has a complete handle on the vibe Whitley is going for. Lawrence’s work on “The Runaway Prince” is very reminiscent of an old-school JRPG, so much so that you’re waiting for the menu box to pop up and offer you equipment options. And it’s great.
The pin-ups by Moriarty and Leuver are nice intermission pieces. They really capture the Princeless universe quite well and are also great to look at. Action Lab could easily offer the pin-ups as standalone prints and they’ll likely be snapped up by many.
Say what you want about comics from the big two, but it’s books like Princeless: Short Stories for Warrior Women #2 from Action Lab that offer readers something a little lighter. That’s not to say they don’t tackle the bigger issues, as the Princeless series always deals with issues such as racism and feminism. They do it in a way that’s not preachy though, instead relying on good storytelling and art to subtly get the message across.
This is in previews right now!
You can order it from you local comic shop or if you don’t have a comic shop you can go here: http://www.dcbservice.com/search.aspx?search=princeless
This lovely cover is courtesy of Jules Rivera, who also illustrated a short story inside. It also features art by Kelly Lawrence, Meredith Moriarty, Nancy King, Sarah Leuver, and series artist Emily C Martin. Don’t you want to be holding this book in November?
This month, you can find Princeless Short Stories For Warrior Women in Previews for you to order. Inside (and outside) you will be treated to some lovely art from artistic powerhouse Jules Rivera. So, now I’m going to treat you to some of that here.
Check out some early sketches of two “new” characters that appear in Jules’ piece. They should look vaguely familiar to long time comics fans…or players of fantasy video games.

Okay, Wednesdays are now going to be for recommendations. So, if I have a rec for you that I think solidly speaks to those who love Princeless, I’m going to post it here.
The first one I know I have linked to previously as it is written illustrated by Princeless short story illustrator Jules Rivera. It’s called Valkyrie Squadron and it’s an amazing piece of work. It’s a sci-fi action/mystery with some great strong female characters and a plot that will keep you guessing. If you’re not reading it already, hop to it!
Hey everybody! Sorry, I fell off there a little bit, but we’re back and we have fresh art for you from Ms. Jules Rivera.
If you remember, she’s doing a story in our short story collection called “Meet The Smiths” featuring our beloved you blacksmith a few years before we meet her. What does this page have to do with Bedelia? Well, if you can’t tell then you probably haven’t read Princeless Issue 3. You should get on that.
